I agree it can be problematic but through appropriate use of the model controls and features we have had good results getting the models to run with reasonable stability, possibly small spikes at beginning or end that don't affect the desired results, but otherwise pretty smooth.

A local agency here now requires unsteady RAS modeling for almost all open channel work. We use unsteady RAS with some regularity and reasonable success and I think nothing of "throwing together" a quick unsteady RAS model.
